The Friends of the Longmont Library strengthens our community by promoting the Library and literacy and raising money to enhance the library’s programs and services.
Who We Are
The Friends of the Longmont Library was created in 1983 out of our mutual love for our Library. It all started when a small group of Library enthusiasts got together to form a group dedicated to encouraging public support of the Longmont Library, putting on programs and exhibits for adults and children, providing cultural activities, and creating a volunteer program.
Bea Melchow, then-director of the Longmont Library, had collected withdrawn library books the Library no longer needed and told a member of the fledgling Friends group, “You are going to run a book sale.” And so we did. The sale was on a Saturday morning with only two tables set up outside the library. The Friends made a few hundred dollars to benefit the Library.
Shortly thereafter, in 1984, the Friends of the Longmont Library was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization. By the end of our fiscal year in 1985, we had a budget of over $1,375.00, 77 members, and had held a computer fair attended by 300 people, a May book sale, and the first Light-a-Candle fundraiser.
The following years saw a steady increase in our budget, membership, and activities. Adult programs and discussion groups became well-attended events. Frequent requests from the Library for funding for the latest technology began a trend that continues to this day.
Now, over thirty years later, the Friends of the Longmont Library has over 500 members, an annual budget well over $100,000.00, a year-round Lobby Book Shop, and four BIG Book Sales. Funding projects for the library has continued to set new record amounts.
The Friends of the Longmont Library has certainly accomplished the goals of those visionary early members and eagerly anticipates many more years of support for our outstanding Longmont Library. We’ve certainly come a long way!
What We Do
Through membership fees, book sales and other fundraising activities, we provide tremendous gifts to the Library — essential for the Library to expand their outstanding services and programs to our community. With the remarkable support of local readers, writers, and commercial sponsors, we are able to provide financial underwriting for all library programs and many library services that would not be possible without our contribution. We support a wide variety of adult programming, children’s story times and summer reading programs, special collections, and premium services. Honestly, so many of the aspects that make our library particularly enjoyable, useful, and unique are provided through Friends’ grants.
We have a truly special library to call home, and with the constant support of the Friends, it will only get better and better!
